Bury the Lede: A Journalism Mystery

By Ellen Goodman, Lynn Sherr

Four reporters, one dead body—a scoop for the ages.

Bury the Lede introduces four veteran journalists who were bought out, pushed out or downsized from a media world that has lost its way.

It begins at midnight, when Charley “Blue” Bluestone, controversial editor of The Winship Messenger, drives off for a secret rendezvous with a Supreme Court justice—who just happens to be an old flame. By morning, he’s dead.

The shock of Blue’s death reconnects four smart and feisty allies from the old days:

Abby Widing, longtime superstar of United Network News, now widowed and ejected from her anchor chair. She still lives for the big story—if only she had a seat.

Dan Malone, former star columnist for the Boston Post, with a mouth as quick as his two-fingered typing. He’s lost his job and his third wife.

HT (Harriet Tubman) Dunbar, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, dumped from her newspaper. A certified liberal with a son working for the political enemy, she longs to be heard.

Nikki Giannini, intrepid war-zone photographer, now cooling her lenses at society weddings. With a wife at home and a trans niece by her side, her fingers twitch to be back in the game.

They all ask the same question: Who would want Blue dead? The Supreme Court justice? The power-hungry billionaire? The shady local police chief? The small-town readers outraged by his reporting on a local abortion clinic?

The foursome come in from the cold to solve the murder, rescue journalism and fight the soft bigotry of ageism. And maybe even find romance. One thing is certain—this quartet is not ready for the ice floe.
