Miami is an urban matrix with a population that is richly diverse in occupation, living style, and culture. But one variable that is common to many of Miami’s residents is that 80 percent of them were not born there. They have come from points north, looking for sunshine, and from points south, looking for freedom and the American dream.

Xavier L. Suarez, the first Cuban-born mayor of Miami, embodies the American dream. His son, and his peers, are the lucky second act of that mostly felicitous drama.
